Western Red Cedar was revered by the Northwest Coast aboriginal people for its beauty, durability and versatility. Cedar was prized for dugout canoes, totem poles, carvings and building material, and it is still highly valued today for roofing, fence material and boat building lumber.
Copper was considered the symbol of wealth and proudly worn by chiefs on ceremonial occasions, or traded as a commodity of great worth.
Our new Split Cedar Box is hand split from 'shake bolts' of Native Western Red Cedar. The lid is inlaid with an embossed copper plate, featuring Native and Celtic designs in raised copper relief. The inside walls of the box also feature split cedar and the bottom is velvet lined. A copper medallion on the inside of the lid acknowledges the artist and design.
